Chico Outlaws pitcher winding up Chico is in the Sacramento Valley, where the climate is
Mediterranean in nature. This means that Chico is subject to hot summers, with daytime temperatures in the 90-100 range (and often higher!). The record high temperature recorded in Chico was 117 in July of 1972!
To many, summertime means baseball and Chico has its own hometown team, the Chico Outlaws. They have been playing at Nettleton Stadium every summer since 2005. Those who have been in town long enough will remember their predecessors, the Chico Heat, who played 1997-2002. What better idea for a summer evening date than peanuts and Cracker Jack (and maybe a local beer?) as you root for the home team!
Looking to stay cool in the midst of hot weather? Upper Bidwell Park has an abundance of swimming holes, such as Bear Hole, Brown's Hole and Salmon Hole. One Mile also has Sycamore Pool, which is actually an area of Big Chico Creek that has had the sides and bottom cemented in to create a swimming pool. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the summer. Shapiro Pool and Pleasant Valley Pool are two more options, if you prefer to swim in a more formal setting rather than a flowing creek.
Tubing is a popular summertime activityAn incredibly popular summer activity for Chicoans and students alike is tubing. The Sacramento River has several options, including off Highway 32 near Hamilton City. Another popular tubing destination is Butte Creek. The water is a little rougher, but it is a lot less crowded most of the time.
There are always summertime events to attend such as the Thursday Night Farmer's Market and Friday Night Concerts. Don't let the heat get you down! Get out and enjoy the summer and all it has to offer while it lasts!
