bike_tunnel_construction.jpgChico's first bike tunnel under construction. Annie's Glenn side. 9/12/2008. There is currently one Bike Tunnel in Chico — but it is not yet complete. The tunnel was lowered under the Martin Collins Polk Bridge on Pine and Cypress Streets on August 2nd and 3rd, 2008, just south of one of the busiest intersections in Chico: Vallombrosa, Pine, Cypress, and Mangrove. It will connect Annie's Glen with the One Mile Recreation Area of Bidwell Park. The City of Chico was provided a state grant called "Safe Roads to School" to fund the tunnel and is hoped to make riding to local area schools safer. There is no doubt that this tunnel will be used by the wider, vibrant, bicycling community.

The bike tunnel is part of a larger project to complete a Class I bike path (see Bicycling) through the Glenn and construct a pedestrian and bike bridge to cross the creek at Memorial Way. The City of Chico hopes to finish it by the end of Fall.
