Butte County is one of California's 58 counties. Butte County was organized in 1850 and is one of California's original counties. It is bounded on the northwest by Tehama County, northeast by Plumas County, southeast by Yuba County, south by Sutter County and west by Colusa County. Butte County is named after the Sutter Buttes which were part of Butte County as it was originally comprised. Butte County's nickname is the "Land of Natural Wealth and Beauty".

U.S. Census, it had a population of 203,171 in an area of 1677 square miles. The county seat is Oroville, but Chico is its most populated city. Butte County is home to CSU Chico and Butte Community College.
