Chico is nearly surrounded by orchards. The most common and recognizable are Almond and Walnut Orchards. Orchards are popular in this area because of the fertile, well drained terraces that were formed by the Sacramento River. Before orchards were planted these areas were diverse riparian and oak woodland.
